My Masters-in-Math brother once read an article dissecting how sheetrock manufacturers decide where to build factories. It was a complex math problem to factor the raw material locations in with the transportation costs and the customers' locations. No doubt there's a similar "sweet spot" with regards to buying food. I wasn't sure what to make of it. But I assume that if the majority of people ate locally produced food (when possible), transporting it would become a more efficient process.

I can't remember where I heard that discussion; probably it was NPR or similar. I would be interested in a flushed out study of the matter...

-AnneAnne Findlayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03005305831235654057noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5156167761148331308.post-20216793399597189842009-02-17T15:44:00.000-08:002009-02-17T15:44:00.000-08:00Thanks Ken, and likewise! I did some of the LKHC series last year, which is how I met Steve Rosen (actually only online I think we've corresponded) and how I found your blog! I'm doing Ironman Wisconsin with a team of 12 type 1 diabetics in September. But I hope to get into more road racing next year when I have more time. Anyway, thanks for raising so much $. I read...Glad to hear your bones are in good shape! I read your post and was about to say, "Ha! You should try running sometimes" but then thought I would do a little research first. One study found that endurance running may have similar effects as endurance cycling (reduced bone density, noted in the lumbar spine), that are not as severe with weight training. But another study found the reverse to be true (in men aged 40-50)--that endurance running increased bone density in the proximal femur. Another study found that calcium supplmentation (or, I would assume, reducing calcium loss as you are doing) helped maintain bone density (in the femoral mid-shaft) of young female endurance runners.. Interesting stuff!

P.S. Steve Rosen, who I met through LKHC, pointed me to your blog...
