I'm seeing a lot more bike-commuters lately

As I ride in to work it's nice having more company. And it's fun seeing the wide variety of bikes, clothes, bags and such that these new riders select. A lot of them just bring whatever they have hanging around the house, literally, from years past when they briefly flirted with cycling as a lifestyle. And some interesting old bikes are seeing sunlight for the first time in years. But I have to admit that I am skeptical of the staying power of these "fair-weather bike-commuters." The warm, dry weather, and the long daylight hours have helped encourage these riders, of course. But the high price of gas has too. I doubt that they are likely to keep riding if gas prices drop again. In the 1970s there was a similar surge in cycling, but it ended when the oil embargo did. That's understandable: We are human and it isn't normal to put yourself into an uncomfortable situation, like on a bike seat, when there is a comfortable alternative, like a car. Only weirdos lik...

Dixie Flyer BTB track-bike review

My Serenity's remains. Some of you may know that I had a rather traumatizing incident while driving home, with my friend Nils, after a night race at Hellyer Park's velodrome. 15 minutes after leaving Hellyer we heard a weird thump from above. We stared at each other, I immediately stopped my car and we both got out to see what was wrong. What was wrong was that my beloved Serenity Marvel track-racing bike had fallen off of my car's roof rack! As we stood at the side of Highway 17 an oncoming Jeep, with a shower of sparks underneath it as it ground my bike into the pavement, told me that I'd need a new bike. Review of My New 2007 Giant TCR C2!

Yup; I got a second road-bike! This is only the third real road-bike I've ever owned (not counting the Sears 10-speed I bought in 1974!). I've also owned three mountain-bikes, and a few town bikes and cruisers. For an old guy who has always been an avid cyclist, that's kind of surprising, even to me. I guess I like hanging on to bikes for long periods. Why another road-bike? I could actually justify a new mountain-bike more, as my old 1998 Specialized Stumpjumper is "antiquated," according to Mike Evans, and I feel that bike choice is more important in mountain-bike races. But I don't ride on dirt nearly as often as on pavement, and it was just too much hassle hauling my 2003 Specialized Allez Elite over the hill once or twice every week so I could use it for both bike-commuting and weekend training rides. I plan on leaving the Giant at home, mostly, and the Specialized in Los Gatos at my wife's office for quick turnaround when I bike-commute. (We usually ...
